About the Kenneth Avery/Josephine Van Rossem Studio:
In 1897, a 25-year-old widow named Josephine Van Rossem built a small house overlooking the Arroyo Seco at the head of Scott Place. Within ten years, she would commission several investment houses from Greene and Greene that set the architectural tone of the growing Park Place neighborhood. A large studio was added to her original home in 1908, which went on to have a long history with a number of prominent artists throughout the twentieth century. Known as the Kenneth Newell Avery Studio, the property was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 2024. After remarks at the Gamble House about the always-intriguing Van Rossem and the history of the studio, we will visit this significant artistic landmark and hear about its continuing legacy, sheltering creative endeavors from portraiture to printmaking to film.
