The Gamble House Flower Committee, one of the first committees established at the Gamble House in the 1960’s, has been creating live floral arrangements each week for the Gamble House since 1968.
Ikebana was founded in Kyoto, Japan by Buddhist monk Senno in the 15 century. Under the tutelage of instructor Yumikko Kikkawa, the Gamble House Flower Committee studies the Ohara discipline. The Ohara School emphasizes seasonal qualities, natural growth processes, and the beauty of natural environments. The Ohara School also believes that it is important for its students to observe nature, a perfect complement to the Gamble House and the Greene and Greene aesthetic.
