DETAILS & JOINERY
A craftsman's tour of The Gamble House.
Over 100 years ago a team of gifted craftsmen labored for 11 months to create The Gamble House. Inspired by the designs of Pasadena architects Charles and Henry Greene, the craftsman contractors led by John and Peter Hall, Scandinavian woodworkers, cut, turned, joined, carved, and hand-rubbed 17 species of wood into the House and furnishings that today are recognized as one of the greatest achievements in American architecture and craftsmanship.
Contemporary woodworker and tour guide Jim Ipekjian has studied the art and craft of the Greenes and the Halls for more than 20 years, and has an intimate knowledge of how their works were created. Mr. Ipekjian's Details & Joinery Tour reveals from a craftsman's point of view how The Gamble House was crafted.
On this 3-hour tour Mr. Ipekjian shares his passion and wonder for the exquisite work created by these master architects and craftsmen. His tour will:
- Discuss which woods were chosen and why
- Explain joinery techniques
- Explore the thinking and collaboration that led to the actual craftsmanship
- Examine details of the house and furniture
- Reveal the intricacies of inlay, metal work, and art glass created especially for the House
The next available touring dates in 2025/26 are:

January 17

ABOUT HELLO CRITTER
Hello Critter Goats are the beloved "kids" of Michelle, the "Goat Mama" (she doesn't have the human variety of children!) She has, however, enjoyed caring for pet goats since the eighties. Over time, she has had the opportunity to help at-risk, displaced and mistreated goats find safe, happy homes. For Michelle, the well-being of goats always comes first. As highly intelligent, curious, and social animals, Michelle's kids enjoy traveling to goat-friendly locations to experience the world outside of their barnyard. Their sense of adventure inspires them to hop into their “barn on wheels” and go for a ride where they arrive and thrive from interacting with diverse people, places, and things. The stimulation of new sites, sounds, smells, textures, and tastes, enhances their mood, as well as those who they encounter along the way! Only the goats who wish to go on adventures attend Hello Critter events. Standing at the gate, when they are called, is their way of expressing their desire to join the fun, whether it be a yoga session, sound bath, hike, river walk, play date, creative workshop, or a senior community/school visit. The goats who choose to stay behind, enjoy relaxing, playing, and eating around their goat yard complete with a custom clubhouse built for their enrichment. All of our goats (Roscoe, Floyd, Billy, Burlap, Fanny, Lil'bit, Gigi, Felix, Hansel, Gretel, Goldie, Lexie, Lashes and Patches ) are highly valued, sentient beings. Their individual needs are met throughout each day to ensure that they are healthy, happy, well-cared for, and deeply loved. Visit our website to learn more about them at www.hellocritter.com.

FIRE & LIGHT TOUR
The Gamble House is a glass-lovers paradise containing exquisite glass windows, light fixtures, wall sconces, cabinets, and doors. Fire & Light, a 2-hour in-depth tour, explores the leaded art glass in The Gamble House.
Fire & Light looks at the Greenes' evolution of style; what led them to create some of the most celebrated art glass produced in an architectural setting; how the works were designed and produced; and the journey taken by the glass artists/craftsmen of the period.
Contemporary glass artist and Gamble House docent, John Hamm, has immersed himself in the history of art glass and the Arts and Crafts movement. He has restored glass fixtures in historic structures and has created period-appropriate glass for many contemporary craftsman-style houses. Combining his artisan skills with years as a tour guide, Mr. Hamm created and personally conducts this craftsman tour that focuses on glass while also touching on each area of the house that is normally on tour.
